Joan Carrie Long, 74, of Knoxville, TN and formerly of Oskaloosa went to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, November 30, 2013 in Knoxville.
Joan was born February 24, 1939 in Oskaloosa to James & Edna Courtney. She attended and graduated Oskaloosa High School in 1957. There she met Loren Long and they were united in marriage on March 31, 1958.
Joan and Loren moved together to Oklahoma where Loren was in the service. Later they moved back to Oskaloosa where they had two children. Together, they enjoyed riding motorcycle’s with a group of close friends.
Joan worked as a special education teacher for Oskaloosa Community Schools and then later became a LPN at Mahaska Health Partnership.
Joan enjoyed attending small groups, crocheting, shopping, and following her grandkids activities.
Her family includes her son and daughter in law, Mark and Kelly Long of Cedar, Iowa; Daughter and son in law, Cindy and Tony Houston of Knoxville, TN; Grandchildren, Clint & Ashton Long, Carrie VanderBeek, Ashton Ferguson, Ryan & Melissa Houston, and Christian Houston; Great Grandchildren, Addison, Ava, Weston, Jaden, Landen, and Christian; her brother Richard Courtney of Oskaloosa; nephew & nieces Corey, Kristy, & Sherry.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Loren Long; and her parents, James & Edna Courtney.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Wednesday December 4 at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or alz.org.
