Janice Carmer

Oskaloosa. Janice “Jan” Carmer, 76, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, November 7, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born on June 5, 1934, at What Cheer, Iowa the daughter of Henri and Glema Johannes Damerval. In her younger years she worked as an operator at the phone company in What Cheer. On August 6, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald D. Carmer at Montezuma; Don died on August 7, 1992. Following their marriage Jan stayed home to care for her family. After all of her children were in school she took training to become a C.N.A. and started working at the Mahaska Hospital. She continued her career as a C.N.A. with Drs. Collison and Allen in Oskaloosa. She later returned to the hospital, and retired from there in 1997. In retirement she worked for Hy-Vee stocking shelves, a job she enjoyed very much, and continued to work until illness forced her retirement in June of this year. She was a member of the Fellowship Bible Church. She enjoyed her garden and her flowers, traveling, dancing, crocheting, and rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes. She also enjoyed having coffee time with her fellow retired hospital employees. She was a very loving and caring person; she was always concerned for the well being of others.

She is survived by three sons: Denny (& Debbie) Carmer, Roger (& Valerie Crane) Carmer, and Greg (& Chris Krile) Carmer all of Oskaloosa; a daughter in law: Diane Buffington of Oskaloosa; 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; two brothers: Jerome (& Vicki) Damerval of Sigourney and Jerri (& Judy) Damerval of Marengo; a sister: Judith Gatewood of Oskaloosa; her best friend and companion: Ralph Lockard of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son: Terry Carmer; and a brother in law: Roxie Gatewood.

Funeral services for Jan Carmer will be held Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Bryan Latchaw officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 noon and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Tuesday evening from 6-8 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House.
