Sam Kitzman, 72, of What Cheer died Sunday, April 3, 2016. Harvey Samuel Kitzman, Jr. was born August 16, 1943 near What Cheer, Iowa the son of Harvey and Opal Stigers Kitzman.

Sam was a 1961 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. In 1965 Sam drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a Helicopter Crew Chief in Korea. After his honorable discharge he returned home and worked as a farm hand for his father, Merle Gatton and Joe Conrad.

On May 4, 1968 Sam was united in marriage to Diane Allgood at the United Methodist Church in What Cheer.

In 1973 Sam accepted a position with Kaiser Agricultural Chemicals which is currently Crop Production Services in Keswick, Gibson and Oskaloosa. Sam retired after forty two years as a plant manager.

Sam always looked forward to competing in antique tractor pulls and participating in tractor rides. He was a member of the What Cheer United Methodist Church, Webb Lodge #182 A.F. and A.M., and the American Legion.

Sam enjoyed going places and socializing but relished returning home and relaxing in his chair or sit on his swing in the front yard. Sam also enjoyed vacationing in Phoenix and camping at the state fair with his family. He believed strongly in his Christian faith and had a tremendous work ethic.

As a father Sam taught his boys the importance of hard work and organization. As a grandfather he gave his grandchildren unconditional love. And as a husband, Sam was the most stubborn yet loving man a woman could hope to marry.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in law, Larry Weber and Richard McWilliams.

Sam is survived by his wife of forty seven years, Diane Kitzman of What Cheer; two sons: Robb (& Shelly) Kitzman of Waukee and Brian (& Denise) Kitzman of Gibson; three sisters: Sandra McWilliams of Deep River, Rita Parvin of Muscatine and Linda Johnson of Delta; a brother, Sid (& Connie) Kitzman of What Cheer; his father and mother-in-law, Rex (& Marge) Allgood of What Cheer and his sister-in-law, Kathy Jordan of Phoenix, AZ. He was also blessed with six grandchildren: Hazel Kitzman, Zachary Kitzman, Samuel Cole Kitzman, Caleb Kitzman, Cayle Kitzman and Cayden Kitzman.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the What Cheer United Methodist Church in What Cheer.
Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery at Delta.
Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday with the family present from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
