Harriers Continue Season at Grinnell Invite

Grinnell–The William Penn cross country teams fought through windy conditions Saturday morning at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell.

The Statesmen were 12th out of 13 teams with 373 points at Oakland Acres Golf Course, while Central won the title with 36 points. The Lady Statesmen were short of numbers and did not field a full team. Wartburg claimed the women’s crown with 49 points.

Matt Berens of Bethel (Minn.) was the top male finisher in the 8K race with a time of 25:33, while Wartburg’s Alana Enabnit was the first female to cross the line in the 6K event in a time of 21:29.

Yanni Gallagher (Fr., Kanab, Utah, Kanab HS) again topped the Statesmen effort as he finished 68th overall in a time of 28:09. A total of 207 runners were on the course for the men’s event.

Nick Thomas (So., Salmon, Idaho, Salmon HS) was next, just missing the top 100 in 106th place with a time of 29:23. Deane Wichelt (So., Durant, Durant HS) also broke the half-hour barrier, coming in 121st in 29:50. Quintin Marshall (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., McCluer South Berkeley HS), in 162nd (31:30), and Dexter Jordan (Jr., St. Louis, Forest Park CC), in 170th (31:58), were the final two scores for the varsity.

Stepfon Williams (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Normandy HS) and Cameron Pittman (Jr., Carl Junction, Mo., Carl Junction HS) ran as well. Williams was 180th in 32:45 and Pittman was 185th in 33:32.

Valinn McReynolds (Grad., Bellville, Texas, Bellville HS) was the top female runner, placing a strong 25th out of 147 runners on the 6K course in a time of 24:35, while Sade Myers (So., Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford HS) was 98th in a time of 27:55.

Next: William Penn takes a week off before returning to action on Saturday, September 22. The teams will travel to Crete, Neb. that weekend to compete in the Dean White Invitational hosted by Doane.
