George Burk, 62, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, December 8, 2013, at his home in Oskaloosa.
George was born December 16, 1950, in Lovilla, Iowa, the son of Harold “Doc” and Maxine Louise Burk. He graduated from Albia High School with the class of 1969.
Following graduation George served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge he returned to Iowa and went to work for Iowa Road Builders as a heavy equipment operator. After 10 years as a heavy equipment operator, George went to work at the V.A. in Knoxville. He worked in building management at the V.A. for 7 ½ years. George later bought the Long Branch Restaurant and Lounge in Bussey. After 4 years of running the Long Branch he retired due to ill health. On May 18, 2005, George was united in marriage to Rachel Kirkpatrick in Oskaloosa.
George was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, trap, fish, and hunt for rocks and artifacts. He also enjoyed rattlesnake hunting and hand fishing. He was a lifetime member of National Am. Vets.
His family includes his wife Rachel Burk of Oskaloosa; six children; ten grandchildren; four sisters: Mary Ann (& Bob) Bridgeman of Mapleton, Iowa; Betty (& Bill) Woollums of Albia, Iowa; Marjorie Bakalar of Panama City Beach, Florida; Marilyn (& John) Isley of Oskaloosa; and five brothers: Walter (& Cheryl) Burk of Savanna, Illinois; Jack (& Claudia) Burk of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Larry (& Vickie) Burk of Oskaloosa; James (& Sue) Burk of Troy, Missouri; and Mark (& Amy) Burk of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
George was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Burk; and two sisters, Alberta McVay and Patricia Ford.
As was George’s wish his body has been cremated and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Marysville Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Thursday from 4-8 p.m., so that George’s family can greet friends and relatives.
Military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. at 8 p.m. on the front lawn of the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the family.
