Oskaloosa–The William Penn football team looks to rebound from its first loss of the year as it travels out of state Saturday to meet Trinity International in Midwest League play.

#11 William Penn (7-1, 3-0 MWL) visits Deerfield, Ill. to play the Trojans (3-5, 0-4 MWL) at Leslie Frazier Field at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY: William Penn is 7-3 all-time in its series against Trinity International.

The Statesmen defeated the Trojans for the seventh time in a row with 31-7 victory last year. William Penn produced 532 total yards, including 455 on the ground. Taylor Parsons (Jr., The Woodlands, Texas, Sociology) led the attack with a career-high 237 yards and two touchdowns.

WILLIAM PENN PROFILE: Todd Hafner is in his ninth year as head football coach at William Penn, entering the campaign with a 52-37 career record.

Hafner guided William Penn to a 9-2 record last year and the team again led the NAIA in rushing with 3,634 yards. He was also at the helm in 2010 when the navy and gold won their fifth league crown (first since 1976). The team finished 10-1, tying the school record for wins, and also broke NAIA single-season marks for total rushing yards and yards per attempt. Numerous other school marks were set in 2010.

The 2008 and 2010 Midwest League Coach of the Year, Hafner was also the recipient of the VSN NAIA Coach of the Year and the NFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year honors. As skipper, he has produced 119 all-conference players and 14 All-Americans.

Prior to his career at William Penn, Hafner had coaching stops at Carl Junction HS, Southwest Baptist University, Emporia State University, and Pittsburg State University (student coach).

Hafner graduated from Pittsburg State in 1994 with a degree in mathematics.

William Penn dropped its first game of the year to then-#9 St. Francis (Ind.) 28-19 last week.

Marcus Kerrigan (Jr., Cary, Ill., Sociology) connected on four field goals (50, 47, 25, and 42 yards) and Ed Cazenave (Jr., Marietta, Ga., Communications) returned a kickoff a school-record 98 yards, but four trips to the red zone only netted six points.

For the year, William Penn is averaging 36.2 points and 377.8 yards per game, including 325.6 rushing and 52.1 passing.

The squad is second in the NAIA in total rushing yards (2,605) and rushing yards per game. The Statesmen are also ninth in total scoring (290).

Evan Ressler (So., Cascade, Iowa, Biology) leads the Statesmen offense with 532 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Six other players, including Parsons with 478 yards and five scores, are also over the century mark.

Parsons is now 23-of-59 in the passing game, accounting for 332 yards and two TDs. Aaron Broyles (Jr., Escondido, Calif., Physical Education) has eight receptions, while Cazenave has collected 171 yards through the air on seven grabs.

William Penn has only committed 12 turnovers this year.

Defensively, the Statesmen are giving up an average of 11.2 points and 264.8 yards, including 140.4 passing and 124.4 rushing.

William Penn is strong nationally in points allowed per game (third) and passing yards allowed per game (fifth).

Brock Peery (Jr., Payson, Utah, Secondary Education) tops William Penn with 66 stops. Nick DiMarco (So., St. Charles, Mo., Physical Education) has a team-best 3.5 sacks, while Perry King (Jr., Valdosta, Ga., Physical Education) has recorded three interceptions. The Statesmen have forced 24 turnovers.

Kerrigan is having another strong year, going 26-of-31 in point-after-attempts and 9-of-11 in field goals.

The team is again utilizing a two-punter formation with Kerrigan, DiMarco, and Jason Johnson (Jr., Geneseo, Ill., Industrial Technology) having all sent the pigskin into the air. Kerrigan has 11 punts for a 39.0 yard average, while Johnson has kicked eight times for a clip of 35.4 yards. DiMarco also has seven attempts for a 31.9 mark.

Cazenave has taken nine back for an average of 20.8 yards (long of 98 yards), while Joel Medina (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Sociology) has seven punt returns for a clip of 11.4 yards (long of 40 yards).

William Penn was picked to finish second in the Midwest League.

Trinity International PROFILE: Kirk Wherritt is in his third season as head football coach at Trinity International, entering the campaign with a 5-16 mark.

Prior to his head coaching appointment, Wherritt was Offensive Coordinator for the Trojans. He also had assistant coaching stints at UNLV and Utah. He graduated from Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2003 and earned his master’s from UNLV in 2008.

The Trojans allowed 34 unanswered points in a 48-17 loss to then-#20 St. Francis (Ill.) in MWL play two weeks ago.

TIU led 17-14 at the break, but could not overcome six total turnovers, including five in the second half. Steve Anderson passed for 129 yards, while Chris Elliott ran for 58 yards.

For the year, Trinity International is averaging 31.6 points and 425.9 yards per game, including 256.5 passing and 169.4 rushing.

Anderson leads the group by completing 145-of-238 passes for 1,788 yards. Six receivers are over the century mark, including Daniel Beals with 68 receptions for 856 yards and eight scores. Nigel Pinson has also hauled in 42 balls for 532 yards and seven TDs.

Elliott is the top ball carrier with 560 yards and five touchdowns, while Anderson has also gobbled up 312 yards of his own.

The Trojans have committed 12 turnovers this fall.

Defensively, TIU is giving up an average of 28.0 points and 412.8 yards, including 206.6 rushing and 206.1 passing.

Frank Thammakhotvongxay has a squad-best 52 tackles, while Casey Arneson has sacked opposing QBs four times. Jawon Spivey has two interceptions as the defense has forced 20 turnovers this year.

The Trojans have used a few different kickers with Noah Moore pacing the group by going 13-of-18 in extra points and 4-of-4 in field goals. Derek Mathewson has had a strong punting campaign, kicking 37 times for a 43.1 average.

Steve Lockhard, with an 18.8 average, and Pat Alexander, with an 18.2 clip, make up the team’s kick return duo. Alexander is the lone player with multiple punt returns (two returns for an 11.5 avg.).

Trinity International was picked to finish sixth in the Midwest League.
