Dutch notch a pair of wins at volleyball tournament
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – It was only a matter of time. The Central College volleyball team had battled to five sets four times in its first five matches, Friday the team only needed six total sets to claim its first two victories of the season.
Central (2-5 overall) opened the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Invitational with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-19 win over Alervno College (Wis.) and capped the night with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-20 triumph over tournament host M.S.O.E.
“It was great to see us finally be able to sing our fight song after both matches today,” said coach Jeanne Czipri. “We are consistently focusing on improving so many things every time we step on the court, and to be working with a group that is showing so much growth is so exciting.”
Senior middle hitter Jenna Dille (Carlisle) notched 15 kills and five blocks, senior setter Regan Nelson (Pella) had 35 assists and sophomore defensive specialist Brooke Caves (Oskaloosa) had 21 digs in the pair of wins.
“We started a bit slow in a few sets but found our rhythm and we’re able to finish in three sets both matches,” said Czipri.
The Dutch continue tournament play Saturday at Noon against Maranatha Baptist University (Wis.) and ends the day with Beloit College (Wis.) at 2 p.m.
“Our defense, as a whole and individually, is improving and it’s good to see our setters and hitters running a balanced offense,” said Czipri. “We’re eager to continue to grow and keep making positive progress every time we step into the gym.”
