Dutch baseball team splits on last day in Florida
AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Central College baseball team secured a 10-3 win over The College of Saint Scholastica (Minn.) Friday before dropping the second game 4-2 in extra innings.
Central (8-4) finishes its Florida trip by winning five of eight games.
Freshman Jackson Torbit (St. Louis, Mo., Webster Groves HS) went the distance on the mound in the opener, striking out five and scattering seven hits while yielding three runs.
“I’m very excited for Jackson on the complete game and first collegiate win,” coach Adam Carey said.
Designated hitter Dom DeLaPaz (senior, Davenport, West HS) had a solo home run for his fifth blast of the season. DeLaPaz, center fielder Max Steinlage (junior, Cedar Falls) and left fielder Dylan Williams (junior, Woods Cross, Utah) each had two hits. Third baseman Brayden Sawyer (junior, Grundy Center) scored three times and drove in a pair.
“We swung the sticks really well in the first game,” Carey said. “We played all around a solid game.”
Steinlage allowed just one hit over seven innings as the starting pitcher in game two. He struck out five and worked around four walks as both runs he allowed were unearned. Bryce Haessig (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) took the loss in relief after yielding two additional unearned runs in the eighth.
“Max had a phenomenal start on the mound,” Carey said. “He dominated throughout the day. Bryce gave us a chance at the end and the ball just didn’t bounce our way.”
In game two, the Dutch had three errors in the field, were picked off twice at first base and left six runners on base.
We made too many mistakes in game two,” Carey said. “We didn’t do all the little things right and it cost us in the result.”
Central returns to Iowa and starts the American Rivers Conference next Friday with a 3 p.m. game at the University of Dubuque.
“It was awesome trip,” Carey said. “We learned about ourselves and I’m excited to see how can take what we’ve learned. This is a fun group and we eager to see what we can do.”
