Dennis Hartwig, 62, of What Cheer died Friday, May 13, 2011. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta. Military honors will be conducted by the James Murphy American Legion Post #319. Visitation will begin at noon on Sunday, family present Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Dennis Carl Hartwig was born March 23, 1949 in What Cheer, Iowa the son of Carl and Roberta (Walker) Hartwig. After attending Tri-County High School he enlisted in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge Dennis returned home and later married Vicky Koch on October 23, 1971 at the Baptist Church in What Cheer. Throughout the years Dennis has worked for various companies as a Truck Driver. In 1987 he became a member of the What Cheer Fire Department where for over twenty four years he committed himself to the cause. Over time he gained the respect of his peers and was elected Fire Chief. He held the position until his health began to fail. Volunteer work was important to Dennis. He took a great deal of pride helping who ever, whenever and however he could. Dennis also coached Little League and served as both Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leaders. He was a former member of the Keokuk County Fair Board and the What Cheer Lions Club. Dennis enjoyed an outdoors life style. Especially the beauty this world has to offer that only an outdoorsmen would understand.

Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Hartwig; an infant sister and an uncle, Herman Hartwig.

His legacy will be cherished by his wife Vicky, a son William D. Hartwig of New Sharon; a daughter, Michelle Ver Steegh of Oskaloosa; his father, Carl Hartwig of What Cheer; his sister and her husband, Donna and Gary Kempf of What Cheer and seven grandchildren: Stephanishia, Ashton, Lilyann, Jordan, Victoria, Patricia and Garrett.
