Cold-Shooting Statesmen Fall to Flames
Omaha, Neb.–The William Penn women’s basketball team struggled from the floor in a 97-66 non-conference loss to Saint Mary (Neb.) Tuesday.
The Statesmen (4-5) hit just 29.2% of their shots, while CSM (5-2) made over half of its attempts (50.7%).
William Penn led once in the opening seconds, but could not keep pace with the hosts, falling behind 48-30 at halftime. The visitors came out of the break on a 9-3 run to narrow the deficit to 12 points at 51-39. Unfortunately, they could get no closer.
Even though they were outrebounded 51-40, the navy and gold were more opportunistic on the offensive glass with a 19-12 edge in second-chance points. WPU committed three more turnovers, 16-13, leading to a 21-10 CSM margin in points off turnovers.
Susan Smith (Sr., Eugene, Ore., Biology) hit five of her team’s nine three-pointers en route to 15 points. The senior dished out four assists and was also one of three players with two steals. Dani Stahle (Sr., South Weber, Utah, History/Government & Psychology) also hit the double-digit mark with ten points.
Brittany May (Sr., Gladstone, Ore., Biology) managed nine points, while Lauren McKinnis (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Sociology) tallied eight points.
Jessie Kreuser (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) contributed six points in addition to squad highs in rebounds (8) and blocks (3).
“We just gave this game away,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “We are not a consistent team right now and have to work on that.”
