Central snags league track and field honors again

Central College

PELLA—Central College’s Ethan Miller (junior, Seymour) and the 4×100-meter relay team have captured Iowa Conference men’s outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the second straight week.

Miller is the field events athlete. He matched his career best in the high jump at the Monmouth (Ill.) Invitational Saturday with an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of six feet, 11 inches, sharing second place with two competitors. Miller also won the long jump with a leap of 23-4.5, a provisional-qualifying performance. He is one of four tied with the best high jump mark in Division III and a previous long jump mark (23-10.25) is currently seventh.

The men’s relay team of Trevor Veach (junior, Grinnell), Mitch Wagoner (freshman, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS), Kyle Wood (junior, Newton) and Allen Scovel (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) is recognized as the track events athlete. The squad crossed the line in a season’s best 41.48 seconds to win the event. The provisional-qualifying time ranks eighth in the nation.

It’s the seventh consecutive week the Dutch men have been cited in either track or field events and the sixth straight week Wood has won the track events honor. Miller has been tabbed three times this season in field events.

Central defends the Iowa Conference crown at the league meet hosted by Cornell College in Mount Vernon beginning Thursday. The decathlon is slated to start at 3:15 p.m. Field events will begin Friday at 1 p.m. and running events will start at 3 p.m.

The men are two-time defending indoor and outdoor conference champions and have won 12 of the past 20 outdoor titles.
