Central gets 10 all-league football picks

PELLA—Central College landed 10 players on the all-Iowa Conference football squad.

The Dutch were matched by Wartburg College with a league-high 10 selections. Eight of Central’s picks are seniors and three are repeat honorees.

Receiving first-team recognition were offensive lineman Garret Albers (senior, Keystone, Benton HS), linebacker Keith Rush (junior, Griswold), an honorable mention pick last season, and placekicker Kevin Sheldon (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS).

Chosen to the second team were quarterback Nate Snead (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS), wide receiver Jeremy Snead (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) and kick and punt returner Mike Furlong (senior, Davenport, Assumption HS). Both Sneads were honored for the third time after being first-team selections the past two years. Furlong was a first-team choice last season.

Also named to the second team were offensive lineman Casey Tanner (senior, Greenfield, Orient-Macksburg HS), defensive lineman Brady Hill (senior, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS), running back Preston West (senior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) and punter Preston Roberts (senior, Bloomfield, Davis County HS). Tanner and Hill were both honorable mention picks last year.

Linebacker Ryan Steinkamp (senior, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS) received honorable mention.

Sheldon led the league in kick scoring (6.8 points per game) and extra-point conversion percentage (97.9). Nate Snead was second in passing efficiency (143.5) and Furlong was second in punt returns (9.1 yards per return).

Central compiled a 7-3 overall record with a 6-2 league mark, finishing tied for second in conference play. The Dutch have not had a losing season since 1960.
