Bill Cox, 68, of Montezuma, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020 at his Montezuma home. Billy Stephen Cox was born on September 10, 1951 in Burlington, IA to Stephen and Velma Frost Cox.
Bill spent his early years in Burlington and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1969. Bill received his Bachelor’s Degree from UNI, received Masters at Iowa State in administration and received another Master’s Degree from Truman State in counseling.
On June 5, 1976, Bill married Kathy Escher at St. James Church in Washington, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Kelly, Adam, Stephen and Andrew.
Bill began his teaching career in Washington High School before moving to teach at Notre Dame High School in Burlington. He taught social studies and coached track and baseball. He then was a counselor and elementary principal at Semco High School in Gilman. His first superintendent position was at Orient-Macksburg and he then moved to Montezuma becoming superintendent from 1995 until 2007. Bill coached high school baseball and Pony League baseball, and many years as 6 on 6 girls basketball coach. He shared time as superintendent at Montezuma and eventually Tri-County before going full-time at Tri-County. He retired for a short time before working part-time at William Penn in Oskaloosa from 2011 until the present. He tutored students, taught education courses, and also worked with student teachers.
Bill loved spending time with his family and enjoyed most sporting events, especially baseball. He and his family enjoyed spending their yearly vacation at Okoboji.
Bill is survived by his children; Kelly (& Steve) Parrish of New Sharon, Adam Cox of Des Moines, Stephen Cox of Grinnell and Andy (& Jessica) Cox of Iowa City; his grandchildren: Anna Van Ryswyk, Kasen Van Ryswyk, William Cox, Anderson Cox and Olivia Cox.
As were his wishes, his body has been cremated.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2020, beginning at 10:30 am at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma.
