Des Moines – Jordan Pope of Albia High School was among the 20 high school students selected to participate in the Capitol Project program, which took place this week at the Iowa State Capitol.

During the program, the group of students met with statewide elected officials, legislators, pages and lobbyists. The students worked with bill drafters and policy analysts as they imitated the legislative process from brain storming their legislative ideas to its passage or veto. When not working on their legislative bills, students had the opportunity to observe the gavel-in process and the floor action in both chambers, as well as tour the capitol and have dinner with Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds at Terrace Hill.

“This unique project really allows students to get a hands-on view of the Iowa legislative process and how it works,” said Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz. “It was a pleasure to meet this year’s participants and learn about their legislative ideas.”

“A great experience that I will never forget!” Pope stated.

The Iowa Secretary of State’s office and the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council sponsored Capitol Project to provide an interactive educational program for Iowa high school sophomores and juniors interested in government and the democratic process. Capitol Project is a stepping-stone for future leaders – allowing students to experience government in action and providing lessons in goal setting, teamwork and leadership.
