Albert C. Eisenman, 84, of Grinnell died May 11, 2011, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A memorial service has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Mayflower Community Carman Center in Grinnell with the Rev.’s Orlan Mitchel and Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or Mayflower Human Needs Fund.
Al was born on July 28, 1926, to Joseph and Anna Eisenman in Oakville, Iowa. After graduating from Burlington High School, he served in the United States Navy during World War II and the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning from the service, he received his Bachelor’s of Arts from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. In 1948, Al married Mary Catherine (Mary Kay) Crawford; the couple lived in Des Moines before moving to Grinnell in 1954, where they had three children. In 1989, Al married his surviving spouse, Marie Olsen Walker.
An active member of Grinnell’s business community, Al operated the town’s Chrysler/Plymouth dealership for 17 years, followed by 17 years at Grinnell Federal Savings Bank. In addition to his professional life, he was a 55-year member of the UCC church, serving in many capacities; a member of the Board of Directors of Grinnell Federal Savings Bank for 35 years; a trustee of Grinnell College for 25 years; and a board member of Grinnell Community Hospital, which he was privileged to help merge with St. Francis Hospital to form what is now known as the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Al also helped develop the Grinnell Public Housing Program, and served as a member of the Grinnell City Council as well as the Industrial Development Organization.
Al is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Marie, his daughter JoAnn Britton of Grinnell; sons Richard Eisenman of Rochester, New York and John Eisenman of Clinton; step-daughters Martha Sheffield of Scottsdale, Arizona and Gayle Walker of Westerville, Ohio; seven grandchildren and five step-children, Luke Britton, Taren and Jeff Aprati, Shane and Keith Eisenman, Liana Eisenman-Wolford, Emily and Laura Eisenman, Cpt. Angela Waterworth, Crystal Sheffield, and Hilary and Kelsey Walker; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Peter.
