Earl Johnson, 87 of Montezuma passed away Monday, May 2, 2016 surrounded by the love of his family and caregivers at the Montezuma Specialty Care Center. Earl Fredrick Johnson was born on April 30, 1929 in Hedrick, Iowa to Paul and Katie (Schafer) Johnson.

Earl graduated from Hedrick High School. He married his high school sweetheart, best friend and soul mate, Betty Jean Westercamp on May 23, 1948 in Hedrick, Iowa. They had two much-loved daughters, Marla and Marsha.

Earl served in the Army as a mechanic based in Japan during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Earl had worked as a farmer, blacksmith, welder for Poe Construction and Lage before retiring.

Earl was a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He had a great sense of humor and just enjoyed life. He loved his family, flowers, watching TV and Westerns (Louis L’Armour). Earl also enjoyed watching basketball, the outdoors and just plain giving people a hard time.

He is survived by his two daughters: Marla (& Mark) Ewing of Montezuma and Marsha (& Bob) Blong of Mason City; five grandchildren: Kelly Ewing of Cedar Rapids, Katy Ewing of Montezuma, Kerry (& Mark) Spooner of Montezuma, James Blong of Mason City, and Tina (& Mike) Deardeuff of Hampton; his five great grandchildren: Sammy Spooner, Patrick Spooner, Darin Blong, McKenna Blong and Riviera Nelson; and many friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty in 2009; his sister, Pauline Williams; and his brother, William Johnson.

Graveside funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A procession will form about 10:25 am to go to the cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Penn Central Train Club in Oskaloosa.
