William Penn and the United Way Team Up Once Again

William Penn University

William Penn University is partnering up with the community once again. The undergraduate students of the College for Working Adults program at William Penn have put together something spectacular with the United Way of Mahaska County this fall. CWA alumna, Christy Bellinger (2009) is the Executive Director of United Way. Bellinger is working with the Marketing for Managers class in creating a new marketing plan for the United Way.  The marketing plan is just one requirement of the $20,000 Strengthen Rural Iowa grant that United Way received this year.

Bellinger came to CWA Adjunct Professor, Alan Poock with the proposal. Poock pursued the idea, noting that, “It’s not that often that (our) marketing plans or team projects are being used for a real company.”

Part of the aim of the marketing strategy is to educate the community about the United Way and how it impacts the community; so, not only will the plan help the students gain real world marketing experience, but the community will benefit through United Way’s services.

“When we discovered that we would need to submit a marketing plan to complete the requirements of this grant, I immediately thought of the CWA.  As an alumna, I realize how much it means as a working adult to do meaningful projects, and since our organization has both a limited staff and a limited marketing budget, we needed the help.  We feel that this opportunity to get not just one, but five potential marketing plans, and give the students experience, is a win-win for both William Penn and the United Way,” stated Bellinger.

The class developed five marketing plans which were presented to the United Way of Mahaska County Board President Dennis Givens and Bellinger on Tuesday, October 26th.  On November 1st, the United Way Awareness Committee will review the five proposals, and put them together into one plan to be not only submitted, but also implemented.
