Lady Statesmen Even MCC Mark with 64-40 Defeat of Viterbo
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s basketball team was without its best player Wednesday night, which made its 64-40 win over Viterbo that much more impressive.
The Lady Statesmen (4-11, 2-2 MCC) evened their Midwest Collegiate Conference record despite not having the services of Orielle Thomas (So., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS), who was sick and not even in the gymnasium Wednesday. The win also knocks Viterbo (5-11, 3-1 MCC) from the ranks of the league’s unbeatens.
Beyond the first 4 1/2 minutes of play (6-5 V-Hawk lead), the night belonged to the navy and gold. William Penn was ahead 27-17 at halftime and poured it on in the second stanza, outshooting the visitors 40.4%-25.9% overall.
With Thomas unavailable, Coach Brian Spielbauer’s team stepped up and played a very balanced ballgame, recording 13 assists on 23 made shots.
Katie Golomski (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Pius Xi HS) led all players with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while Sam Abens (So., Knoxville, Southwest Minnesota State) added 12 off the bench.
Sarah Martin (Jr., Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek HS) also reached double digits with ten, while Megan Evangelista (So., Chanhassen, Minn., Chaska HS) contributed eight points with two early trifectas.
Susan Smith (Jr., Eugene, Ore., Lane CC) dished out four assists, while Jessi Kreuser (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Henry Sibley HS) blocked three shots in addition to a team-high eight rebounds. Abens paced the Lady Statesmen with two steals.
William Penn outrebounded Viterbo 42-37 (16-10 second-chance points) and committed only 12 turnovers to 16 for the V-Hawks.
