Visitation: Will begin at noon Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 p.m. to service time to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 6 p.m., Tuesday evening September 13, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tom Boomershine of the Central United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment: Bowling Green Memorial Lawn

Bowling Green Arrangements: Visitation will again be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, MO. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with Chris Gamm officiating.

John died Saturday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. John Melvin Parcell, son of Elmer D. & Catherine Gott Parcel was born Nov. 7, 1921 in Pershing, IA. He was a 1940 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. He served as a Ship’s Cook First Class in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific Theater from Sept. 16, 1942 to Oct. 30, 1945. On July 18, 1944 he married Verda Hunter. She died after 51 years of marriage in Sept. 1995. John was in the meat business most of his life; working at the A & P Tea Company Meat Market in Burlington, IA; Albia, IA; Bowling Green, Mo; Carrolton, IL; and the IGA Meat Market in Louisiana, MO. He lived in Bowling Green, MO from 1953 to 1996, when he married Helen Force and returned to Oskaloosa. John was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. He joined the Masons in 1952 in Albia, IA; he was a Past Master and a 50 year member of the Phoenix Lodge #136 of the AF and AM and a member of the V.F.W., both in Bowling Green, MO. John enjoyed all sports and bowled for many years.

John is survived by his wife, Helen of Oskaloosa, a son & daughter-in-law, John C. & Cathy Parcell of Raytown, MO and a daughter & son-in-law, Kathy & Chris Gamm of Bowling Green, MO; a step-daughter, Cheryl Edge and her husband, Tim of Eddyville, IA; eight grandchildren: Kent Parcell, Khristina Hoover-Baxter, Matt, Nick & Sarah Gamm, Josh Nicklaus, Dan Sowers and David Sowers; and 15 great grandchildren: Andrew and Victoria Hoover, Dylan Walsh, Parker, Landon, Jersey, Justus & Dalton Gamm, Branden Doering, Rose Privett, Elijah Huber-Cooper, Braedon Nicklaus, Gavin Nicklaus, Dalton Sowers and Dustin Sowers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Verda; two brothers: Earl & Charles Parcel and four sisters: Lucille Chambers, Helen Tinsley, Darlene Kerr and Catherine Treanor.

Memorials may be made to the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa of the First Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green.
