Jack Hoyt
Oskaloosa. Jack Hoyt, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, May 16, 2011, at his home west of Oskaloosa. He was born February 13, 1927, at Rose Hill, Iowa, the son of Roscoe A. and Ione Wymore Hoyt. He attended Oskaloosa High School. On August 4, 1943, he was united in marriage to Irene Avonne “Vonnie” Gregory at Oskaloosa. On February 1, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He did his basic training in New York and was then sent to Diesel Engineering School in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his training he served on the U.S.S. Brewster and later transferred to the U.S.S. Brownsville. He was honorably discharged on April 15, 1946. Following his service to his country, he returned to Mahaska County and he and Vonnie lived on the family farm. Jack went to work for Ed Prothero operating heavy equipment, and farmed on the side. He later went to work for John Morrell & Co. in Ottumwa for approximately 25 years until they closed. He then went to work for the Mahaska County Secondary Road Department for approximately 21 years until his retirement. In retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Jack delighted in spending time with his family, he truly enjoyed family gatherings at his and Vonnie’s home. Jack was very interested in his heritage, he traced his ancestors back to those who immigrated to America. He was a life long member of the American Legion and served for many years on the honor guard.
His family includes his wife of over 67 years, Vonnie Hoyt of rural Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Cathy and Dan Patton of New Sharon; a son and his wife: Richard and Sue Hoyt of rural Oskaloosa; four grandchildren: Sherry (& Dave) Dobbs, Dane Patton, Tammy (& Rodney) Sytsma, and Bethany (& Avery) Gatton; 11 great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter: Michaela Lynne Patton; and a half brother: Wilbur Hoyt.
Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. in the Henness Cemetery west of Oskaloosa with Pastor Brice Hoyt officiating. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V. A procession will form at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. for those wishing to go to the cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Wednesday after 11 a.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Wednesday evening from 5-7 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice.
