WPU Unable to Slow Down Graceland on Road
Lamoni–The Statesmen men’s basketball team had few answers for Graceland Monday as it fell 112-83 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
William Penn (4-12, 3-9 Heart) was outshot 54.5%-40.3% on a night when it trailed from the opening tip.
The visitors failed to get the proverbial engine started Monday against the Yellowjackets (13-3, 10-2 Heart). The hosts scored the first five points of the contest and were never threatened.
WPU did shoot well from behind the arc at 57.1% (8-for-14) and also outrebounded GU 50-35. That edge on the glass resulted in the visiting crew posting a 15-11 margin in second-chance points.
Unfortunately, the navy and gold could not overcome 21 turnovers (eight for Graceland) which turned into a 21-7 advantage for the Yellowjackets in points off turnovers.
Shug Sneed (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Computer Science) headlined the William Penn attack with 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting. He was 6-for-9 from the free-throw line, while the Statesmen were 17-for-25 overall. Graceland was nearly identical at the stripe at 19-for-28.
Cam Marshall (So., San Diego, Calif., Sports Management) was also 6-for-11 from the floor to pace William Penn’s bench with 18 points. Willie Anderson (Jr., Norristown, Pa., Applied Computer Science) joined the double-digit club with 16 points as well.
Manny Hammonds (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa, New Media) knocked down all three three-pointers in which he attempted for nine points, while Jayvin Brown (So., Waldorf, Md., Business Management) matched him with nine.
Justin Bradley (Jr., Okinawa, Japan, Biology) added seven points in the loss.
Marcus Bell (Sr., Shreveport, La., Exercise Science) did not score, but was productive on the boards with a squad-high 12 rebounds.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Thursday to host Mount Mercy in Heart play at 7:30 p.m.
