WPU Loses First Game of Season

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team gave a good showing Tuesday against the first of what will likely be many ranked foes this fall, but eventually fell 2-0 to #19 Olivet Nazarene in non-conference play.

The Statesmen held a 13-12 advantage in shots with a handful of players recording two attempts each. Unfortunately, the visitors failed to find the back of the net and had the tables turned on them after managing a shutout of their own last weekend against Avila.

After one half of scoreless action, the Tigers (1-0) got on the board in the 57th minute and then doubled their edge in the 80th minute.

Goalkeeper Austin Munoz (Sr., Harrisville, Utah, Sports Management) finished with six saves in the setback.

“This was a good matchup for us against a strong opponent,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We stuck to the game plan well in the first half and limited their chances. I think we were unlucky to not win or tie the game. I believe we were actually the better team in the second half, but missed several chances and then ONU caught us on a few breakaways.”

“Our performance was good, but we did not take our chances when they were presented,” Highcock said. “This was a good learning experience for us and we will move forward.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Saturday, hosting Robert Morris in non-conference action at 5:30 p.m.
