by Wade Steinlage
Des Moines–Assisted by four forfeits, the Statesmen wrestling team defeated Benedictine 34-21 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet Saturday.
In addition to its four uncontested wins, William Penn (2-8, 1-4 Heart) also claimed victories in two other bouts to pick up its first Heart win of the campaign.
125-pounder Jeremy Andujar (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Biology) and 133-pounder Darquell Pierre (So., St. Petersburg, Fla., Sociology) both earned forfeit victories to open the day’s action.
Unfortunately, the Ravens answered by taking the next four matchups and put the navy and gold in a 21-12 hole entering 174 pounds. Jason Beebe (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was then gifted a forfeit to get WPU back on track, and 184-pounder Jay Fresh (Grad., Knoxville, Iowa, MBL) put his squad on top for good with a 14-2 major decision over Anthony Mabery.
Cody Jones (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) clinched the dual triumph by pinning Ethan Vistro in a time of 2:47 at 197 pounds and heavyweight Will Wan (So., Des Moines, Iowa, Sociology) wrapped up meet with the fourth and final forfeit.
