WPU Blanked in Heart Opener

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s soccer team produced plenty of quality opportunities, but failed to convert as it fell 3-0 to Baker in its Heart of America Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

William Penn (2-2-3, 0-1 Heart) outshot the Wildcats 10-9, but was unable to put away any of those tries.

Baker (3-4, 1-0 Heart), which tallied an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, recorded its first goal in the 26th minute and then doubled the advantage in the 36th minute.

The visitors then iced the contest with an insurance score at the 60:58 mark.

Offensively, Alessia Piombo (So., So., Traverse City, Mich., Business Management) and Jacque Schwager (Sr., Bondurant, Iowa, Psychology) topped the navy and gold with two shots each; both of Piombo’s attempts were on target.

Madeline Danielson (Sr., La Crescent, Minn., Biology) notched five saves in the setback.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next Wednesday to host Clarke in Heart play at 5:30 p.m.
