William Penn Wins Twice at National Duals

Cedar Falls–The Statesmen women’s wrestling team faced numerous talented teams and came away with a pair of victories at the NWCA National Duals Friday and Saturday.

WPU (3-4), which entered as the #5 seed, posted a 2-3 record to place 10th overall. The navy and gold opened Friday with a 35-12 win over Saint Mary (Kan.) before falling to both Providence (Mont.) (36-11) and Baker (Kan.) (22-20).

In Saturday’s battle for ninth place bracket, the Statesmen knocked off Doane (Neb.) 28-18 before losing 24-22 to Hastings (Neb.).

The navy and gold fell behind 7-1 after two matches, but then rattled off five consecutive wins and rolled to the opening win.

Kylie Bustos (Jr., Amarillo, Texas, Nursing) started the run with a forfeit at 117 pounds, while 124-pounder Joanna Vanderwood (Sr., Graham, Wash., Nursing) claimed a fall. 131-pounder Devin Patton (Jr., Plano, Texas, Business Management) earned a technical fall victory, and Kendall Bostelman (Jr., Napoleon, Ohio, Exercise Science) and Naida Abdijanovic (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) both pinned their foes at 138 and 145 pounds, respectively.

USM won the next bout, but 180-pounder Grace Gray (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa, New Media) pinned her opponent and 207-pounder Phoebe Burt (Sr., Iowa City, Iowa, Sociology) wrapped it up with a forfeit.

Providence (Mont.) 36, WPU 11

William Penn was unable to make up an early deficit against the Argos. The crew’s two victories came from Vanderwood via decision and Patton via fall.

Baker 22, WPU 20

Both teams won five matches, but the Statesmen could not come up with enough bonus points to finish on top. 103-pounder Lily Zapata (Fr., Lewisville, Texas, Sociology) got things started with a technical fall, while Vanderwood claimed a decision. Patton and Bostelman each collected technical falls, and Burt tallied a decision.

WPU 28, Doane 18

A 10-0 deficit was easily erased as WPU won six straight bouts (seven of the last eight). Falls came from Burt and 124-pounder Catherine Steinkamp (Sr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science), while Patton, 117-pounder Zao Estrada (Fr., Bluffton, S.C., Sociology), and 160-pounder Alexa Wolf (Fr., Rogers, Ark., Business Management) all notched technical fall wins.

Bostelman and Abdijanovic both won by decision as well.

Hastings 24, WPU 22

In contrast to the Doane dual, the Statesmen jumped out to a huge lead against Hastings, but could not hold on.

Zapata started with a forfeit (Vanderwood also won via forfeit), while Abby Trujillo (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Undecided) picked up a decision victory at 110 pounds. Estrada notched a technical fall, and 131-pounder Tyler Swanigan (Fr., Northville, Mich., Kinesiology) pinned her opponent.
