William Penn Runs Out of Gas in Five-Set Loss
Storm Lake–Playing for the second night in a row may have been too much for the Lady Statesmen volleyball squad as it fell in a five-set thriller to non-conference foe Buena Vista Wednesday.
William Penn (11-11) lost by scores of 26-24, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 7-15.
Highlighted by a season-high 20 kills from Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC), the navy and gold barely lost the hitting battle, .231-.223. The visitors were consistent, hitting between .200 and .259 in all five sets.
Taylor also dug a team-high 11 balls and had two aces against the Beavers (5-13).
Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) reached double digits as well with ten, while Katy Hingtgen (Sr., West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) notched nine winners.
Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC) ended her evening with 23 assists and Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Menomonee Falls HS) contributed 14. Stumberg matched Taylor with two service winners.
Next: William Penn takes the weekend off before returning to action next Wednesday by traveling to Davenport to face St. Ambrose in Midwest Collegiate Conference play at 7 p.m.
