William Penn Drops to CMU in Three Sets
Fayette, Mo.—The Statesmen kicked off its Heart of America Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday with a tough test in the 17th ranked Central Methodist Eagles.
William Penn (5-5, 0-1 Heart) gave Central Methodist (10-2, 1-0) a good fight throughout all three sets but came up short on all three occasions by the scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-16.
The navy and gold performed well on the offensive side as they hit .220 as a team. Corrin Lepper (So., Jefferson City, Mo., Exercise Science) and Libby Zorn (Jr., Billings, Mont., History) led the charge with nine kills apiece while hitting at a .389 and .500 clip respectively. Alyssa Young (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla., Biology) also had a nice outing, producing four kills at a .273 hit percentage.
Annalise Whitcomb (Jr., Humboldt, Kan.) set the table for most of the matchup tallying a team-high 18 assists. Sydney Roush (Jr., Osceola, Wis., Biology) and Macy Bailey (Fr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business Management) chipped in as well with a combined nine helpers.
Alicia Jaquez (Jr., Farmington, N.M., Biology) contributed five digs on defense while adding a kill on three attempts on offense. Cameryn Campbell (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo.) added four digs as well.
Next Up: The Statesmen will return home and host their first Heart of America Athletic Conference match on their new court in the Penn Activities Center against Culver-Stockton on Sept. 10 starting at 7 p.m.
