WPU 14th at Leatherneck Classic
Davenport/Moline, Ill.–With top-100 finishes by all five of its rollers, the Statesmen women’s bowling team placed in the top half at the ISYL Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.
William Penn placed 14th out of 33 teams with a finally tally of 8,174 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. Webber International (Fla.) won qualifying with 8,998 pins.
Diana Zavjalova of Webber International led qualifying with a 241.0 average (1,446) pins, while Kelsey Johnson (Jr., Montgomery, Ill., Secondary Education) paced the navy and gold in 32nd place with a 187.5 clip.
Kirstin Newberry (Sr., Holland, Mich., Secondary Education) was next with a 181.0 average, and Stephanie Adams (Fr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) averaged 178.0 pins.
Brittany Johnson (Fr., Schuyler, Neb., Business Management), with a 169.0 mark, and Montana Pence (Fr., Stronghurst, Ill., Elementary Education), with a 165.0 average, also competed for the Statesmen.
Each team member started in all six games.
Next: William Penn travels to Norfolk, Neb. Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Midland Classic.
Statesmen Just Miss Top Ten at Leatherneck Classic
Davenport/Moline, Ill.–A tough Baker showing dropped the William Penn men’s bowling team down the standings at the ISYL Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.
William Penn placed 11th out of 38 teams with a finally tally of 9,129 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. McKendree (Ill.) won qualifying with 9,601 pins.
The Statesmen were second after regular competition with 6,288 pins, but fell off the pace in combined play.
AJ Johnson of McKendree led qualifying with a 234.8 average (1,409) pins, while Jacques Kaune (So., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) placed inside the top 20 (14th) with a 219.0 mark.
Cameron Foster (Sr., West Jordan, Utah, Business Management), at 212.3 (28th), and Drew Balta (Sr., Walford, Iowa, Education), at 211.7 (30th) also had high finishes.
Piet Schaeffer (Sr., Livingston, Scotland, General Mathematics) joined the trio by starting all six games and owned a 199.0 average.
Travis Scott (So., West Saint Paul, Minn., Physical Education) and Brandon Barboza (Jr., Brick, N.J., Sociology) split the final six games with three starts for each. Scott was exceptional, recording the best average on the team at 231.3, while Barboza posted a mark of 180.7.

Kelly Named to Honorable-Mention Team
Oskaloosa–Angelo Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) guided the Statesmen men’s soccer team’s offensive efforts this fall and was rewarded for that leadership as the all-Midwest Collegiate Conference teams were announced today.
Kelly, a first-time honoree, was tabbed for the league’s honorable-mention squad. A total of 28 athletes were lauded by the MCC, including 14 first-teamers and 14 honorable mentions.
The sophomore forward was a big part of William Penn’s first winning campaign since 2003 as the navy and gold went 10-8-2 (1-4-1 MCC). He had a good mixture of scoring (tied for team lead with six goals) and sharing the ball (team-best seven assists) to pace WPU with 19 points. Kelly managed two game-winners on the campaign.
Jonny Macadam of Grand View was named MCC Player of the Year, while Milan Kovacs of Mount Mercy earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Grand View Head Coach Blair Reid received the COY award from his peers for the eighth time in his career as the Vikings won the regular season title and has his squad currently ranked #1 in the NAIA.
Correia Receives All-MCC Nod
Oskaloosa–Statesmen women’s soccer star Alyce Correia (Fr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) played much better this fall than most first-year athletes and was recognized for her performances as the all-Midwest Collegiate Conference teams were announced today.
Correia, a first-time honoree, was tabbed for the league’s honorable-mention squad. A total of 30 athletes were lauded by the MCC, including 14 first-teamers and 16 honorable mentions.
The freshman midfielder helped William Penn to a 6-13 campaign (1-5 MCC). She finished the year with eight goals and three assists for a team-high 19 points, including tallying three game-winners.
Ashley Dexter of St. Ambrose was named MCC Player of the Year, while Vanessa Barcelleiro of AIB earned Newcomer of the Year honors. St. Ambrose Head Coach Jon Mannall received the COY award from his peers for the fourth time in his career as the Fighting Bees won the regular season title.
