Lady Statesmen Claim 2-1 Win on Senior Night

Oskaloosa–The Penn women’s soccer team may not have played its best all-around game, but behind a tremendous performance from sophomore goalkeeper Aubree Gallego (Arlington, Texas, Mansfield Legacy HS), the Lady Statesmen were able to sneak out a 2-1 victory over non-conference foe Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Senior Night Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen (5-9-2) were outshot 24-15, including 8-1 in overtime, but that lone shot made all the difference.

Entering the second overtime tied at 1-1, Mandy Martell (Fr., Culpeper, Va., Culpeper County HS) gave her seven senior teammates a wonderful memory by burying a long shot past the Culver-Stockton goalkeeper for the winner at the 101:27 mark. The goal was her team-leading sixth of the year.

Dana Tamos (Jr., Victoria, Australia, Ringwood College) gave her squad the lead out of the gate with her first goal of the year off a pass from Melisa Wink (Jr., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS) at the 10:15 mark. The assist was Wink’s team-high fourth of the fall.

The remainder of the game was unfortunately very much controlled by the Wildcats (7-6-1), who eventually scored the equalizer in the 55th minute. Despite numerous chances, the visitors were not able to get the go-ahead goal, mostly due to Gallego’s great play (14 saves), and the teams headed to overtime where Martell became the hero.

The win snaps Penn’s two-game losing streak.

Statesmen Slip by Culver-Stockton 2-1 in Non-Conference Matchup

Oskaloosa–Nick Gorrie (Fr., Kilmarnock, Scotland, Grange Academy) reached double figures in goals as the Penn men’s soccer team defeated Culver-Stockton (Mo.) 2-1 in non-conference action Tuesday.

With the win, the Statesmen (7-6-2) also got over .500 for the first time since being 2-1-1 on September 4. Penn pulled out the victory despite getting outshot 18-15. The home team played much better in the second stanza with a 10-4 advantage.

Tim Eyer (Sr., Palos Heights, Ill., Shepard HS) put his team out ahead early, scoring unassisted at the 6:18 mark for his fifth goal of the year.

The Wildcats (5-8-1) knotted the contest at 1-1 in the 33rd minute and the game remained tied for the next half hour of real time.

That was until Gorrie put home a pass from Daniel Beseau (Fr., Florissant, Mo., Timberland HS) for his team-leading tenth goal of 2010. Beseau’s assist was his first in collegiate competition.

The defense, led by four saves by goalkeeper Tadeo Cavazos (Sr., Baytown, Texas, Lee HS), did the rest, extending the program’s streak to five matches without a loss (4-0-1).

Penn did all of this without their head coach on the sideline as Kevin Rushing was in the hospital with his wife Tasha as they are expecting the birth of their first child.

“I am very proud of the team for stepping up and extremely proud of (graduate assistant coaches) Jake (Plocher) and Vince (Beseau) for picking up the slack the past couple of days with me not being around,” Rushing said via text. “Great win boys!”
