Statesmen Play Waldorf to Scoreless Draw

Oskaloosa–Although it lacked scoring, the men’s soccer contest between William Penn and Waldorf was full of action and physical play as the teams tied 0-0 in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Saturday.

The Statesmen (6-6-2, 2-4-1 MCC), who are undefeated in their last four games (3-0-1), overcame a 17-13 shot differential.

Daniel Beseau (Fr., Florissant, Mo., Timberland HS) and Tom Hogan (Jr., East Moline, Ill., Iowa Central CC) led Penn with three shots each.

Tim Eyer (Sr., Palos Heights, Ill., Shepard HS) added two shots on the night, while Tadeo Cavazos (Sr., Baytown, Texas, Lee HS) made several great stops (ten saves total) en route to his school-record 17th career shutout.

On a sidenote, the programs combined for nine yellow cards, including six by the visitors.

Next: Penn stays at home to host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) Tuesday in non-conference action at 7 p.m.

Women Drop 5-1 Decision to Waldorf

Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen soccer team suffered a rough second stanza in falling 5-1 to Waldorf in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Saturday.

The Lady Statesmen (4-9-2, 1-5-1 MCC) trailed just 1-0 at the break, but gave up four second-half goals to the Warriors (5-9, 2-5 MCC).

Down 4-0 midway through the final half, Victoria Schiebel (Sr., Mansfield, Texas, Mansfield HS) got her team on the board at the 62:57 mark off a pass from Dana Tamos (Jr., Victoria, Australia, Ringwood College). The goal is Schiebel’s second of the fall, while Tamos’ assist is her second as well.

Penn was outshot just 25-21, including six shots by Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., George Washington HS) and five from Melisa Wink (Jr., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS).

Aubree Gallego (So., Arlington, Texas, Mansfield Legacy HS) and Laura Jones-Gentry (Fr., Fruitland, Idaho, Fruitland HS) shared time in goal with Gallego tallying five saves off the bench and Jones-Gentry managing three in the start.

Next: Penn stays at home to host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) Tuesday in non-conference action at 5 p.m.

Penn Leaves St. Francis (Ill.) Tourney 1-3

Joliet, Ill.–The Lady Statesmen volleyball team faced strong competition as it ended the weekend 1-3 at the St. Francis Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Penn (18-14) opened the weekend with a 3-0 loss to the host Fighting Saints (19-25, 18-25, 19-25) before rallying to beat Cornerstone (Mich.) 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 15-13).

The Lady Statesmen were not as fortunate Saturday, falling 3-0 to Saint Xavier (Ill.) (25-27, 18-25, 22-25) and 3-1 to Bethel (Ind.) (16-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-27).

Morgan Bailey (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) led Penn with ten kills against St. Francis, while Emily Stanton (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) added seven.

Krista Pettit (Sr., Grundy Center, Grundy Center HS) posted 11 assists, while Bailey served three aces and Caitlin Hadden (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) had 24 digs.

Stanton’s 12 kills paced the team against Cornerstone, while Bailey and Brittany Rohling (Jr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) contributed ten apiece in the weekend’s only win. Paige Echimovich (Fr., O’Fallon, Mo., Fort Zumwalt West HS) finished with eight and a team-best .381 attack clip.

Matala Keiki (So., Waianae, Hawaii, Leeward CC) assisted on 23 points in her most detailed varsity work of the year. Pettit was right behind her with 22 assists (and 27 digs), while Hadden recorded 28 digs and two aces.

Defensively, Rohling had two solo blocks and four block assists, while Jeanette Cunningham (Fr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Western Brown HS) was also strong at the net with one solo and four assists.

Rohling put down a squad-high nine kills versus Saint Xavier, while Bailey ended the match with six and two aces. Pettit (18 assists) and Hadden (19 digs) were productive as well.

Bailey saved her best for last with a 16-kill showing (.419 attack pct.) against Bethel. Echimovich and Stanton tallied eight kills each, while Rohling had seven.

Pettit quarterbacked the offense with 33 assists and was also the best defender with 28 digs. Rohling scored a half dozen points with six block assists.

Next: Penn travels to La Crosse, Wis. Wednesday to face Viterbo in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at 7 p.m.
