United Way Honors Those Who Volunteer

A dessert bar, door prizes and a big thank you awaited volunteers

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Many times those who selflessly serve others end up going unnoticed. Mahaska County United Way takes steps every year to ensure that the volunteers who make all of the programs possible are recognized.

This year the group gathered at Central United Methodist Church where a dessert bar was prepared. Richelle Holle with the Mahaska County United Way said, “We are offering a volunteer appreciation reception for volunteers that work with the partner agencies that United Way supports, and we’re doing it because we wouldn’t survive without the volunteers.”

Richelle said that the organization relies heavily upon volunteers. Area restaurants donated food for the evening. The festivities included door prizes, also the group awarded a volunteer of the year and a youth volunteer of the year.

Volunteer of the Year is, Melinda Wheeler with Oskaloosa Free Medical Clinic and the Youth Volunteer of the Year is Makayla Scanlon.

Food donations were made possible by subway, Breadeaux, McDonald’s, Grate Expectations Catering, Lois Haines, The Peppertree and Smokey Row.

Stam’s greenhouse donated plants, that were given away, and Central United Methodist Church donated the use of their facility.
