Supervisors Consider Insurance Costs On County Owned Buildings

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met in regular session on Monday, February 3rd, 2020.

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors discussed county property insurance value of a couple of the buildings owned by the county, and if the value of the buildings was increased insurance value was worth paying additional premiums.

The buildings in question are the Mahaska County Annex building and the office building that houses Human Services.

Currently, the Human Services building is insured for $600,000, and initially, the Board was considering increasing to nearly 1 million dollars. Ultimately, the Board decided against raising the minimum.

The other building, the courthouse annex, is valued at $500,000.

Supervisor Steve Wanders made a motion to leave their insurance valuations at their current levels for the upcoming fiscal year, while the remaining buildings, including the courthouse, will go their scheduled replacement costs.

The Supervisors heard from Ann Brouwer in regards to a beautification project around the Mahaska County Courthouse.

The plan is to place panels highlighting Oskaloosa around potential eye-sore locations, such as air conditioners and dumpsters. They will be similar to those found in ‘The Alley’.

During public comments, the Supervisors heard from Oskaloosa area realtor Jason Carter in regards to an issue of land ownership between his client, the county and state governments.

The Board set a hearing date for the maximum asking resolutions for property tax.

The first hearing date is set for March 2nd, 2020, at 9 am inside the 3rd-floor conference room at the Mahaska County Courthouse.

The next meeting for the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is Tuesday, February 18th, 2020, at 9 am in the 3rd-floor conference room. The change in date is due to President’s Day.
