Summer Heat Has Arrived

The youth of Oskaloosa took advantage of the heat to enjoy some time at the pool

Oskaloosa, Iowa- The thermometer has been climbing over the 90 degree mark in Mahaska County for the last couple of days, with one more day of heat in store before showers and cooler temps arrive.

Any place that was cool was key to managing the heat. The Edmundson Park Swimming Pool is one such place that has seen it’s share of use in the last 2 days.

Nearly 500 people have used the pool each day during the recent heat wave. “We’ve been very busy with the hot weather, [it] brings in people who want to get cooled off.” said the manager at the Edmundson Park Swimming Pool.

Carrie Houser said she enjoys going to the pool to “Get out of the house.”

“You feel like your really helping people”,  said Adam Hammes. Hammes is a life guard at Oskaloosa’s Edmundson Park Pool and this is his second year as a lifeguard.

Struggling with boredom and not being distracted are some of the challenges Hammes says he faces in his job. “It can get tough out there 6 hours in the sun.”

Being a part of swim team for some time, becoming a lifeguard seemed to be a natural step for him Hammes said. Hammes has plans to be a lifeguard through college, but getting to college will take an additional 2 years, leaving him plenty of time to learn more of swimming and being a lifeguard.

Rates to enter the pool are four dollars for kids and adults. The pool is fully featured with slides, diving boards, concessions and showers.
