Strong First Day Helps William Penn to Solid Placing at Season Finale
Indianapolis, Ind.–Four Statesmen men’s bowlers averaged over 200 pins as William Penn placed just outside of the top 20 to conclude the regular season at the Hoosier Classic last Saturday and Sunday.
Knocking down 8,720 pins, WPU placed 23rd out of 78 teams at the biggest tournament of the year, which consisted of six regular games and 15 Baker games. Webber International (Fla.) won qualifying with 9,582 pins, but was knocked out of the match play competition in the first round. #4 seed Tennessee Southern eventually won the bracket title.
The navy and gold were their best on Saturday, sitting in 13th after posting three sets over 1,000 (high of 1,122). Unfortunately, the squad dropped off a bit on Sunday, but still managed a very respectable placing.
Alex Acosta of Saint Xavier (Ill.) led the 539-player field with 1,443 pins for a 240.5 average.
Jared Smith (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting) had a strong showing for WPU with a 212.8 average, headlined by five games in the 200s.
Conor Fetherston (Fr., Dublin, Ireland) was next in the standings with a 203.8 average, while Jayson Miner (Sr., Silvis, Ill., Business Management) also started all six rounds, recording a 201.8 mark.
Kody Sapp (Jr., Donnelson, Iowa, Sociology) averaged 199.8 pins in four starts, while Nate Hansen (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska, Industrial Technology) owned the highest average for WPU at 223.0 over the span of three games. Hansen had the top game for the Statesmen at 264.
Coleton Jacobson (Jr., West Jordan, Utah, Exercise Science) (177.5) and Bryce Keykal (So., Princeton, Minn., Education) (168.5) both started two rounds, while Jake Cook (Sr., Keokuk, Iowa, Physical Education) clipped 154 pins in his lone start.
“The guys turned themselves around this weekend after a pair of rougher tournaments,” Head Coach Cameron Foster said. “Even though our final position does not show it, we are happy with how we performed and look forward to taking all of our positives into postseason, beginning with conference this weekend.”
