Statesmen Swept by #11 Pirates

Parkville, Mo.–The William Penn women’s volleyball team failed in its attempt for another top-15 upset as it was swept by #11 Park 3-0 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup Friday.

WPU (8-8, 4-2 Heart), which lost by scores of 16-25, 15-25, 16-25, was outhit .268-.064. The Statesmen were seeking their second win over a ranked foe after defeating then-#15 Central Methodist 3-2 back on September 10.

The visitors trailed 13-8 in the opening set, but rallied back with four consecutive points and five of the next six. Unfortunately, the Pirates (11-3, 5-0 Heart) managed five in a row and rolled to claim the early 1-0 advantage.

William Penn was even with PU in the second round at 7-7, but failed to keep pace as Park went on a 6-1 run. The navy and gold were also unable to catch any traction in the third set in the sweep.

Andressa Borges (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sports Management) guided the offense with seven kills off the bench, while Corrin Lepper (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo., Biology) managed six winners on a .385 attack percentage. Jade Melton (Jr., Hallsville, Mo., Psychology) added five points (.312 mark).

Macy Bailey (Sr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business Management) finished with 16 assists and seven digs, while Riley Hungate (Fr., Joliet, Ill., Business Management) led the defense with 14 digs. Alyssa Young (Sr., Winter Springs, Fla., Biology) and Katelynn Wissman (Sr., Shawnee, Okla., Biology) both tallied two block assists.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Olathe, Kan. Saturday to face MidAmerica Nazarene in Heart play at 12 p.m.
