Statesmen Return to Lanes at ISYL Leatherneck Classic
Rockford, Ill.–The William Penn men’s bowling team fell shy of bracket competition, but still posted a top-half effort at the ISYL Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.
WPU placed 13th out of 40 teams with 8,032 pins in five regular games and 16 Baker games. Webber International (Fla.) led qualifying with 9,257 pins, while #2 seed Wichita State (Kan.) won the bracket title by knocking off WIU in the finals.
Brandon Bohn of Webber International topped qualifying with 1,267 pins for a 253.4 average.
A trio of Statesmen finished in the top 33 with Aidan Piet (So., Meridian, Idaho, Business Management) guiding the squad in 15th with a 220.0 average (1,110 pins). All five of his rounds were in the 200s with a high game of 245.
Landon Piet (Fr., Meridian, Idaho, Biology) was 24th overall with a 214.0 average (four games in the 200s), while Bryce Keykal (Sr., Princeton, Minn., Applied Mathematics) ended up 33rd with a 211.6 clip.
Noah Kidwell (So., Bettendorf, Iowa, Secondary Education), at 189.0, and Conor Fetherston (Jr., Dublin, Ireland, Software Engineering), at 187.8, both started four games for the navy and gold.
Connor Rissi (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Psychology) knocked down 205 pins in his lone game, and Joseph Woods-Weisman (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn., New Media) recorded 164 pins in his only start.
William Penn had its reserve squad in action over the weekend as well. The Statesmen placed 11th in the JV standings with 7,386 pins with Ethan Zieglowsky (Jr., Washington, Iowa, Biology) averaging 201.6 pins to lead his crew.
“Overall, we had a lot of positives this weekend,” Head Coach Cameron Foster said. “The guys bowled really well on Saturday, but the lanes transitioned much quicker on Sunday and we had a hard time keeping up.”
“We keep showing we are going to be a team to look out for as we continue to grow and learn,” Foster added. “We have some things to work on to prepare for the next event, but we will be ready.”
Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Louisville, Ky. from November 22-24 to compete in the NAIA Invitational.
