Statesmen of the Week: Brian Thomas and Valeria Quiroga
Oskaloosa–Baseball player Brian Thomas (Jr., Shingle Springs, Calif., Sports Management) and softball player Valeria Quiroga (Sr., Brownsville, Texas, Sociology) have been named the Statesmen of the Week for the week of February 6-12, presented by Gardner-Collier Jewelry.
Thomas was dominant against Hastings last Saturday, tossing six shutout innings in his first appearance of the season. The junior struck out eight, while walking two and permitting two hits. He managed two perfect frames in William Penn’s 12-0 victory.
Quiroga opened her senior campaign with a pair of home runs and a broken record against Avila last Saturday. She went 1-for-3 in the opener with a solo shot, but was even better in the nightcap. Quiroga had a perfect outing in the second contest, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a two-run homer, but more impressively broke a program record. The senior drew two walks to break the school’s career record with 86; the previous mark of 85 was held by Tyanna Helton (2007-2010).
