Statesmen Nip Central Methodist 20-19

Oskaloosa–Competing for the second night in a row, the short-handed William Penn women’s wrestling team did just enough to get past fellow short-handed Central Methodist 20-19 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet Friday.

WPU (1-3, 1-1 Heart) won two of the four contested matches, and ultimately claimed the meet victory by outscoring the Eagles 22-12 in total points.

On a night where there were not matches at either 109 pounds or 130 pounds, CMU (1-3, 0-1 Heart) went ahead 5-0 with a forfeit at 101.

Catherine Steinkamp (Fr., Quincy, Ill., Biology) cut into the deficit with a 7-2 win over Allison Hynes at 116 pounds.

123-pounder Brittany Cotter (Fr., Katy, Texas, Nursing) then put the navy and gold on top, pinning McKenna Deckelman in a time of 5:00.

Lydia Nelson (Fr., Kirksville, Mo.) was unable to have her hand raised at 136, but went the full six minutes in a 6-3 setback to Autumn Barela to garner another point for the Statesmen.

WPU forfeited at 143 and lost at 155 to fall behind 19-9, but 170-pounder Toyia Griffin (Fr., Nashua, Iowa, Nursing) and 191-pounder Andrea Smith (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) both earned forfeits to close the night in a 19-19.

The coaches and the referee then conferred about the tiebreaking criteria, eventually needing total points to determine William Penn as the winner.
