Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s bowling team opened its 2018-2019 campaign with a solid showing as it competed at the Midwest Collegiate Championships Saturday and Sunday.

WPU was right in the mix after six rounds of regular play, sitting in eighth, just 46 pins out of third. Unfortunately, Baker action did not go as well and after 16 ‘team’ games, the Statesmen dropped down to 11th with 9,566 pins.

McKendree took the team crown with 9,941 pins, while Michael Martelli of Robert Morris (Ill.) was the individual champion with a 236.0 average (1,416 pins).

Just five Statesmen competed in regular bowl with each individual rolling all six games. David Decker (Jr., Peyton, Colo., Physical Education) headlined the crew with a 216.7 average, while Curtis Majka (Sr., Elgin, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) was next at 213.0.

Rok Kostric (So., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), at 207.0, Aleksander Kostric (So., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), at 204.7, and Nick Walker (Sr., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management), at 203.2, also all broke the 200 barrier in the season opener.

Next Up: William Penn returns to action on October 20-21 as it travels to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the Columbia 300 Western Shootout.
