Statesmen Hit Mats at MVC Open
Marshall, Mo.–The William Penn men’s wrestling team sent a small crew south as it competed at the Missouri Valley Open Saturday.
125-pounder Gentry Walston (So., New Sharon, Iowa, Human Resource Management) and 285-pounder Skylar Young (So., Eddyville, Iowa, Secondary Education) paced WPU as both pinned two opponents.
Kendal Pugh (So., Letts, Iowa, Business Management) recorded two wins as well at 174 pounds with one fall and one technical fall.
Jacob Perry (Salisbury, N.C., Industrial Technology), at 149 pounds, and Anthony Hackman (So., Shelley, Idaho, Psychology), at 197 pounds, also both notched a fall.
“This tournament was a good prep for postseason for our guys who did not compete in Friday’s dual,” Head Coach Drew Sams said. “The guys started a little slow, but seemed to reel it back in as the tournament continued. We strung together some wins on the back side to gain valuable experience against some strong competition. Our guys are kicking it in gear as we make a strong push towards postseason. It is exciting to see them compete hard.”
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Tuesday to host William Woods in a non-conference dual meet at 6 p.m.
