Statesmen Fall Short Against Yellowjackets
Lamoni–The William Penn men’s wrestling team produced a solid effort against No. 25 Graceland Tuesday, but could not claim the upset in a 29-16 Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet loss.
WPU (0-6, 0-6 Heart) won four matches (two by bonus points), but failed to claim the victory in Head Coach Drew Sams’ return to his alma mater and previous place of employment.
Down 6-0 after the opening bout, the visitors got on the board as Lane Scorpil (Jr., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Business Management) defeated Nick Foster by a 10-2 major decision at 133 pounds.
141-pounder Carson Jensen (Jr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) then gave the navy and gold their only lead of the evening as he held off Riley Harger 7-3.
The edge went back to GU with wins in the next two matchups, but 165-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Sports Management) trimmed the deficit with a narrow 7-4 triumph over Juan Lopez.
Branson Bottorff (Sr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) tightened the margin once more with a fall at 184 pounds, but the Yellowjackets sealed the meet win with victories at the final two weight classes.
“Our guys had another opportunity to wrestle high quality competition and get better tonight, but we could not quite put it all together to get the win,” Sams said. “I feel as though we are continuing to grow into our own and we are excited for our athletes to hit their stride for the postseason.”
