Statesmen Dominate Lower Weights to Take Down Bulldogs, 27-22

Kirksville, Mo.–The William Penn wrestling team won six of the first seven matches to cruise to a 27-22 dual-meet win over NCAA Division II Truman Thursday.

WPU (1-1) claimed victory at five of the eight contested weights, including three bonus-point victories, and also earned a forfeit victory to even its dual record.

The visitors pulled out to a 15-0 advantage right away, beginning with a forfeit at 125 pounds taken by Jeremy Andujar (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Biology). John Altieri (Jr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) then doubled the advantage at 133 pounds with a fall in 3:00 over Caleb Osborn.

Tyshon Cannon (Jr., LaGrange, Ga., Psychology) nipped Nick Peglow 10-9 at 141 pounds to make it 15-0 after three matches.

The teams then exchanged falls with 157-pounder Kionte Crocker (Sr., Brandon, Fla., Industrial Technology) getting his hand raised by pinning Angelo Talabert in a time of 6:15.

Johnny Hopper (Sr., Basehor, Kan., Psychology), at 165 pounds, topped Zach Taylor 12-6, while Jason Beebe (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) locked up the meet victory by dominating Luke Komotos to the tune of a 17-4 major decision at 174 pounds.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Indianola Saturday to compete in the Simpson Invitational. Action begins at 9 a.m.
