Statesmen Continue Undefeated Season
Leavenworth, Kan.–The William Penn women’s lacrosse team refuses to be slowed down, blowing by Saint Mary (Kan.) 18-3 in a non-conference matchup Saturday.
William Penn (5-0) rolled over its opponent, despite only outshooting the Spires (1-1) by a 30-21 tally.
The Statesmen were their best in the first quarter, scoring eight goals, headlined by three from Emily Ferguson (Jr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science). Kenzington Winget (So., West Jordan, Utah, Sports Management) assisted on one of the Ferguson scores and also scored once herself in the first.
Bailee Royal (Sr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management), MacKenzie Petersen (Sr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting), and Paola Cruz (Sr., Ocala, Fla, Biology) all added goals in the eight-score first period as well.
The trio of Winget, Ferguson, and Royal all scored in the second quarter, while USM finally broke through to make it 11-1 at the break.
Out of halftime, Jenna Donlan (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Business Management) would get into the fun with two goals of her own, while Peterson and Ferguson scored as well.
Saint Mary scored two more goals in the fourth quarter, but WPU again outpaced them by scoring three times, courtesy of Cruz, Ferguson, and Ashlyn Hoffman (Jr., Bend, Ore, Nursing).
Ferguson led WPU with six goals, while Royal finished with three. Winget, Peterson, Donlan, and Cruz also all finished with two goals.
Madison Reed (Sr., Shakopee, Minn., Secondary Education) was excellent in the net, recording 11 saves on 14 shots faced.
“Week after week, our players apply themselves and play high quality IQ games,” said Interim Head Coach Joshua Bell. “Each week comes with new challenges, and they just keep driving with their foot down on the gas.”
Next Up: William Penn will have a week off before traveling to Miami Gardens, Fla. to play St. Thomas on March 14 at 5 p.m. (CST).
