Statesmen Bats Stifled by Viking Pitching
by Wade Steinlage
Des Moines— William Penn (13-34, 7-24 Heart) traveled to Des Moines to take on the rival Grand View Vikings (35-6, 25-4 Heart) in a Heart doubleheader on Wednesday.
The teams played two highly contested games, but the Vikings pitching was too much as they would shut out the Statesmen 3-0 and 1-0.
GVU 3, WPU 0
Jillian Calabrese (Fr., Anthem, Ariz., Elementary Education) got the start for William Penn in the circle and gave a great performance going 6.0 innings and allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 4.
Grand View would score 2 runs in the bottom of the first and added 1 in the fourth. The 3 runs would be all the Vikings needed.
Roxanna Jensen (Sr., Coto de Caza, Calif., Psychology) led the Statesmen offensively going 1-3 with a double to left-center field in the top of the third inning. Dalaney Bice (So., Woodward, Iowa, Human Services & Psychology) would follow the double with a single to give the Statesmen runners on the corners with no outs. The Statesmen would not be able to capitalize and would strand the 2 runners.
GVU 1, WPU 0
Katie Springer (Jr., Riverside, Iowa, Undecided) would start game 2 in the circle and the Junior would give a terrific effort completing 6.0 innings, striking out 5, and allowing only 1 earned run.
The Statesmen would crank out 5 hits in the game, but left 6 runners on base.
The bats were highlighted by Bice’s 2-3 game. It was the sophomore’s 14th multi-hit game of the season.
Defensively, William Penn played a fantastic game, allowing no errors to the Viking’s 2.
Next Up: William Penn will travel to Marshall, Missouri to take on the Missouri Valley Vikings in a conference doubleheader on Friday beginning at 2 p.m.
