Shooters Finding Success Beyond WPU
Oskaloosa–A few members of the Statesmen shotgun sports teams have enjoyed wins outside of wearing the navy and gold over the past year.
Cole Henning (Fr., Wilton, Iowa, Industrial Technology) was the Iowa State Trap High Overall Athlete and won numerous trophies at the Grand American Championship. He was named ATA All-America Captain for juniors as well.
With a score of 198-for-200, Brianna Thompson (Fr., Campbellsport, Wis., Psychology) won the Lady 1 Singles title at the Wisconsin ATA State Shoot. She also posted a perfect 100-for-100 to claim the SCTP Lady Grand Champion honor (won the shoot-off), while earning AIM ATA Lady Singles Champion accolades at 99-for-100.
Thompson was the Handicap Overall Champion at 99-for-100 from the 22-yard distance, while notching the Lady 1 Champion of Champions victory at the Grand American Championships (100-for-100, won the shoot-off).
Since the age of 16 (five years in a row), Connor Gittings (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Biology) has been named the All-State Junior at the Missouri State Sporting Clays competition as the top-scoring junior in the state. At that competition, Gittings has won enough events to advance into the AA class which is one step below the highest class (Master).
The aforementioned quartet, along with a plethora of other talented shooters, helped William Penn to a perfect fall campaign. In addition to the title at its own tournament, WPU also won at Coe, Simpson, Midland, Grand, View, Warburg, and remained perfect as Iowa state champions, claiming its fourth crown in a row.
