Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa School Board met in special session on Tuesday, April 23rd, at 6 pm, where they discussed teacher contracts for the upcoming school year.

The total cost of the agreement with teachers for the next year is $222,780.00.

Oskaloosa School Superintendent said that the agreement came pretty close to the board’s agreement of $225,000.00 as the top dollar for next year’s cost to the budget.

“I think the committee and the superintendent did, and the board secretary did a tremendous job,” said board member Carl Drost, who made the motion to approve the new agreement.

The agreement passed unanimously.

The board then tackled revisions to the health insurance package for employees of the district.

If the district didn’t make changes to its most popular health insurance plan, the district would be facing an additional $450,000.00 in health insurance plan costs.

The plan is looking at a change from a $500 deductible to a $750 deductible for single, while the out-of-pocket will move to $1500 versus $1000 and family will go to $3000 from $2000.

A Tier 4 will be added to the prescription drug which is a $90 deductible co-pay, for “lifestyle drugs” or “choice drug.”

There is no premium currently for the single plan, while the family plan will rise to $100 from $50.

Plan 3 for the district will no longer accept new employees to the plan, as dictated by the insurance company.

With the changes, the cost to the district’s budget goes from nearly $450,000 to approximately $134,000, an amount the district will make up with self-funding, which is part of the total increase approved prior of $222,000.00.

The district is looking to bring in the insurance company to help people choose which plan they would like to enroll in, as open enrollment takes place during the month of May.

“I think it’s really important to encourage the employees and their spouses to attend those meetings,” added Drost.

Changes for health insurance were approved unanimously.

The district took bids recently for a pavement replacement project, replacing portions of the parking lot in front of the middle school, George Daily Auditorium, and the high school area.

Three companies submitted bids, with the low bid coming from TK Concrete in the amount of $440,043.75, coming in below the engineer’s estimated cost of $476,000.00.

The next scheduled board meeting will be May 14th, 2019 at George Daily Auditorium board room beginning at 6 pm.
