Sunrise Beach, Mo.–Two players at the top of the standings helped the Statesmen men’s golf team to its best finish of the fall thus far as it won silver at the Porto Cima Invitational.

William Penn placed second out of seven teams with a two-day score of 623 (309-314) at the par-72 Porto Cima Golf Course. League foe Missouri Valley claimed the crown at 610 (305-305).

The event served as a conference tournament preview as next spring Porto Cima will be the host site of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships.

After an opening 77 put him four strokes back of first, Zachary Chegwidden (Jr., Essex, England, Business Management) bounced back with the lowest round of the tourney, carding an even-par 72 on Tuesday to tie for first place (40 individuals) at 149. Unfortunately, he was not able to take home the biggest prize, dropping the tiebreaker on the first hole of a playoff with Nicolas Evangelio of Missouri Valley.

Oscar Florez Martinez (So., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) enjoyed the best performance of his career, finishing three strokes off the lead in third place at 152 (75-77).

Spencer Tucker (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was next as he tied for 14th at 160 (76-84), while Oliver Stanway (Jr., Leicester, England, Sports Management) tied for 21st at 166 (81-85).

Davis King (Fr., Upminster, England, Sports Management) rounded out the varsity scoring by tying for 30th at 172 (91-81). Peter Frederiksen (Sr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering), competing as an individual, tied for 25th at 167 (88-79).

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before concluding its fall season on October 15-16 by traveling to Silvis, Ill. to compete in the NAIA Midwest Invitational. Play will be contested at TPC Deere Run Golf Course.
