Ralph J. Hackert, of Richland, died Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Maplewood Manor in Keota.

Ralph was born on March 20, 1926, on the family farm south of Pella, Iowa, the son of Cornelius and Grace (DeZwaart) Hackert; the youngest of five children. He attended Richland School by Pella. On December 19, 1946, Ralph was united in marriage to Mary Carpenter near Reasor, Iowa. They were married for over 66 years. Mary passed away in February of this year.

Ralph and Mary established the family farm north of Richland in 1957, together they worked on the farm for many years. Ralph had many talents that, coupled with a strong work ethic and the spirit of an entrepreneur, brought on many other family businesses.

Ralph’s greatest joy was working with his family. He and Mary enjoyed square dancing and Ralph was an excellent pool player. Ralph had a beautiful tenor voice and was approached several times to sing professionally. He and Mary provided music for many occasions. He was a member of the Richland United Methodist Church.

Ralph is survived by his four children; Bonnie (Dale) Ingersoll of Richland, Sharon (Mark) Traner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rhonda (Mike) Noel of Richland and Craig (Darcy) Hackert of Richland, seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents and siblings: Carl Hackert, Edna VanDenBerg, Ruth Steinhoek, and Florence VanGorp.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, November 14, from 6-8 at the Richland United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be Friday morning, November 15, at 10 a.m. at the Richland United Methodist Church with Pastor Willy Morfitt and Reverend Carl Benge officiating.
Burial will follow in the Reed Family Cemetery located on the family farm near Richland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Lewy Body Dementia Association or Hospice Compassus.
Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
