Question of the Week: Do You Believe There Is A Drug Problem Locally?
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Last time we asked you if you would support a combined County/City Government. 64% of people responding said they would not support a combined government, while 21% were unsure. 15% said they would support the combined County/City Government.
The question of a drug problem is decades old and has been asked and looked at since the earliest days of the 20th Century with the Federal Government. Morphine, heroin, and cocaine were problems at the turn of that century when the products were available easily and openly in many cases.
After WWII, the drug problem was nearly all but forgotten until the 1960’s when drugs like marijuana, amphetamines, and psychedelics made their way into the culture at that time, which lead to the creation of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 1973.
During the 1980’s President Reagan made the first drug czar to oversee what has been called ‘The War on Drugs’. This was decided to be necessary when drugs like cocaine and finally the very addictive crack cocaine appeared.
Recently, meth has made its way across the country and can be made from many over-the-counter ingredients. Now with tighter laws, it seems that it has become easier to manufacture the drugs in places like Mexico and import them. Recently, prescription drugs have become a problem as is evidenced by programs, hosted by local police departments, that allow people to come and safely dispose of unused prescription medicines.
