Question of the Week: Do you approve or disapprove of the new legislative redistricting plan?

Last week, we asked you if you believed that Mahaska County Supervisor Willie Van Weelden should resign. 156 residents voted with 98 residents (63%) saying yes, 42 residents (27%) saying no, and 16 residents (10%) saying unsure. The question of the week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the view of Osky News.

This week, we shift to a statewide issue. This past week, the Iowa General Assembly voted to pass the 1st redistricting plan. The move came after a bipartisan committee unanimously urged the legislature to pass the 1st plan. The vote in the house to pass the plan was a 91-7 vote and the vote in the senate was a 48-1 vote.

Supporters of the new plan say that it is democracy in action. They say that the plan came from a non political group that received no influence from outside groups and that because of that the districts are balanced.

Opponents of the plan cite the 3 different districts within the plan. They say that it appears to be more biased towards a particular party based on Congressional Districts and based on the number of incumbents facing each other in primaries.
